loss of function or inability to move the injured part is usually caused by pain and swelling

swelling, resulting from fluid accumulating in the tissues surrounding the fracture, may make the recognition of other signs more difficult. discolouration may also develop.

deformity is any unnatural shape or angulation of a limb or joint, as compared to the other uninjured limb.

unnatural movement may be observed at the site of the fracture;

shock increases with the severity of the injury.

crepitus or grating is a sensation or sound that can often be felt or heard when the broken ends of bone rub together. this should never be tested for intentionally.
