for your EDIFICATION
just recently i have rediscovered online a formative fanzine from my youth, the redoubtable SHOCK CINEMA. many of the films listed in the "favorite films" box over there yonder underneath my silly picture were initially brough to my attention thanks to this fanzine's editor, steve puchalski, who used to manage jim's video on st. mark's place in nyc. if you live near any sort of enlightened video store, i would recommend that you rent anything from the "four-star favorites" section.
n.b.: stay away from this list if your goal is to be a working filmmaker. your creative sensibility will forever be warped in a way that will doom your career before it ever begins.

my roommate is upstairs recovering from a nasty cold (and who isn't?) and watching "fight club." in spite of the fact that the man who wrote the book is a landmark graduate and basically an unwitting pawn of l. ron hubbard's schitzophrenic pseudo-science, i can respect his storytelling abilities, and shall try my utmost to get her to talk about "fight club."
i understand that rule number one is not to talk about fight club. i'm pretty ornery that way yes i am.

zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance: "along the streets that lead away from the apartment, he can never see anything through the concrete and brick and neon but he knows that buried within it are grotesque, twisted souls trying the manners that will convince themselves they possess Quality, learning strange poses of style and glamour vended by dream magazines and other mass media, and paid for by the vendors of substance. he thinks of them at night alone with their advertised, glamourous shoes and stockings and underclothes off, staring through their sooty windows at the grotesque shells revealed beyond them, where the poses weaken and the truth creeps in, the only truth that exists here, crying to heaven, god, there is nothing here but dead neon, cement and brick."
one need not give up to this, you know. all it takes is to grow closer, rather than apart from, the world that surrounds us. such is the point behind robert a. heinlein's "grokking," which many people on this site will be quick to reference, but not to practice in their own lives.
