A long, long time ago I got a 6-inch splinter in the bottom of my left foot while running barefoot across my friend Drew's mom's deck. Being young and drunk we decided the best thing to do was for Drew to "sterilize" a steak knife on the stove and then dig it out, which went well enough to only leave me limping for a few days.
So I've recently been feeling pain from an old knee injury, and as luck would have it Drew is a physical therapist. His fiancee used to be one as well, but now she mainly does research, which has concentrated on the knee lately.
I went over their place the other night for treatment, and he had actually cracked open the books to find tests that his employers don't typically give him time to do. It felt really weird to have him bend me into positions normally reserved for SG doubles sets and I couldn't help picturing him with that steak knife.
Unfortunately, he found that it was in fact a reemergence of the old injury (several meniscus tears) which they can't treat but he thinks I'm "strong enough to overcome it." They changed my leg workout routine to strengthen the area and put less stress on the knee and I'm already seeing improvements after using their advice only once.
Anyways, it just goes to show what a difference 12 years can make. This time around we were both sober, he knew what he was doing, he sought expert advice and I'm actually limping less than I was a week ago.
