Exert from my Alaskan bike tour journal.

June 27th 09

We are now just outside of Little Smokey. The mosquito presence here is substantial.

The weather today was excellent. We may have even had a small tail wind at one point. Unfortunately, the last few days seem to have run their toll on Steven. His knees are hurting him. I guess I wasn't the only one who thought Thursday was too hard. As it turns out, yesterday Steven had known his knees were hurting and had decided to quietly combat it with IB profen. Well naturally things were worse today. He could barely walk or ride this morning. He better get better. Once at Valleyview I think a day off will be on order. (30km away).

I saw a very cute young fox in the ditch today. It was white, which is something I've never seen before. When it saw us riding on the highway it obviously tried to run away. Due to the terrain, it ran in parallel to the shoulder. So because we were on a bike and slightly faster than it we managed to ride along side it for a good 20-20 meters. Once we got ahead of it, the fox swerved and ran into the bush.

Authors note: The mesquitos got much worse later in the trip. That day didn't even compare. At this point I had actually had a strong suspicion that Stevens knee condition was worse then he was indicating. In response I had been leading the wind breaking for most of trip and making sure we took lots of breaks. However I did not allow us to take a day off till Grand Prairie. I just really wanted to get past GP since thats where I assumed the trip really started. It is because of that mindset that I can share some of the blame for our difficulties later on. One intersting occurance that day that I did not write about was that Stevens father drove out to give him a new seat. His previous seat was merely a piece of leather on a piece of curved wood. Steven loved that leather brick though

When I got home last night, I looked for you on the guest list but couldn't find you on it. I must be blind. But I actually remember how to spell your username. I was going to request friendship, but it looked like maybe you were very picky about who you add as friends, so I was scared to. Yes, I'm a dork that way.

Thanks for adding me!
