Warning: Relatively long blog post ahead.

I got a new watch yesterday! It's cute, no? I haven't worn a watch in years. I used to wear a spikey bracelet I got in England when I was 17, but I lost it this last trip up north in the wedding suit we all got ready in on the day of my best friends wedding. It was the end of an era and now it's the beginning of a new one.

Went to brunch with some of the Sg Dixie crew today. It was good times all around. Went to the Original Pancake House up in the ham. I would plan an event here in Tuscaloosa, but unless you're a die hard football fan there is really nothing of interest to do here.

And now let's talk toys. You see, I watch a lot of Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. Please, spare me your diatribes on why I shouldn't let my son watch television of any kind. Honestly, I enjoy playing on the floor with him while we watch television, and there are even some cartoon shows I like. But anyway, I digress. When watching all these shows there are obviously going to be a lot of commercials for a lot of crap, especially now with Christmas around the corner. Some of the toys advertised for little girls really boil my blood! They are completely sexist and set women back about one hundred years. The following is a short list of a choice few that really stand out.

Barbie Peekaboo Playset

This little gem for little girls is a miniature shopping center complete with wedding chapel!! I understand that not everything has to be educational and some things can be just for fun, but really, this is just degrading.

Barbie Party Cruise Boat

It's a booze cruise! For Barbie!! I understand dolls need to go on vacation, but I just would not feel right giving a little girl something that inadvertently promotes drinking while boating.

McDonald's Toy Cash Register

I understand that toy cash registers can help kids learn about counting money and the like, but a McDonald's one? You've got to be kidding me. It's like setting your kid up for failure AND a bad diet. I didn't see a commercial for this, but dkmfc and I saw it in Big Lots about a year ago. We were going to pick one up for when Wolfgang gets older and starts to mouth off to us about how unimportant school is. Our plan was when that would happen we would give him that cash register and tell him to 'start practicing!'

There are more toys that piss me off. I will jot them down as I see their commercials.

Another thing that pisses me off is the way moms are portrayed in commercials on tv. As if we are made whole and happy simply by seeing how clean and germ free everything is and how much our kids love orange juice and peanut butter. We don't need fulfillment, we just need more stuff. What is the worst part is that women fall into this trap and fall hypnotized by all this advertising rhetoric full of stereotypical Stepford Wives.

Another thing I hate is the way men are portrayed in commercials too. As if they are more like having another child rather than a competent and rational partner. It's degrading to all involved.

The fridge in our apartment is making a weird noise. I hope it doesn't break and spoil the food. That would be tragic.
