One of my best friends has been through some tough times over the last few years, and today he called with his latest experiences. I wrote down the details so I could try and help.

In May of 2004, he was in a psych facility for grief issues. 6 days cost over 10,000 bucks.
Insurance paid all but $3,000. He put that plus his other outstanding debts in a debt management program.

After a few months, the psych facility gave him a payoff amount. His balance with the debt management program was changed to the new amount. All he received was paperwork showing the amounts had changed.

His debt management account was recently paid off, or so he thought.
The psych facility said his balance was $3,000. They said the insurance company had taken back $1,500 twice. They said insurance companies have 5 years to make such adjustments.

The insurance company said they had no record of requesting refunds.
The psych facility wouldn't call them, they said the insurance company had to call them.
The insurance company said they didn't normally do that, but they'd do it as a courtesy.
The psych facility said the balance was $1,500, not $3,000. They said they had no record of it being $3,000.

The insurance company said they had contacted the psych people. A year after my friend's hospitalization, the psych people sent $1,500 back to the insurance company because they said it had overpaid.
The insurance company had reviewed their records and decided they had not made a mistake, so they sent the money back to the psych people.

The original $3,000 that was owed had been cut in half as a payoff...remember that part? Here's where the problem came up.
The debt management company had changed their balance when they got information from the psych people about a payoff amount. The payoff amount had to be paid in a LUMP SUM, and they wouldn't take payments. Therefore, while my friend had been paying on his remaining balance over the years, he was only paying half what he owed.
Nobody called him (he's home 24/7 because he's on disability). The only paperwork he received says the amount was cut in half, but no lump sum was mentioned. The debt management company had changed his balance based on the paperwork they received.
So now he's set up a monthly payment situation with the psych facility. $100 per month until it's payed off...
Or will it be???

Oh, did I mention my friend has schizoprenia? Imagine trying to deal with all that shit with his condition!

I used to think I was over-doing it by checking various accounts of mine so much...after talking to my friend, I wonder if I'm checking enough...
