This is an easy one but a great one at that, you can take a peek into my history.
To start out my favorite author would have to be Ellen Hopkins. You have to know a book by her no matter where you turn! The style in which she writes is unique as well as what she writes. She writes verse novels, which is a twist on poetry basically. For me it makes it to where i read it the way i think she would want me to.
Ellen Hopkins orginally got famous off of the Crank series. This series is about her daughter who got hooked on what i like to call the devils drug, methamphetamines. She explains all the feelings one has on meth in great depth and accuracy.
Now I know you guys don't know this but my family and I all have a history with being mentally imblanced. (Bipolar,Scizophrenia,Depression) How do people usually treat that? Self treatment. Drugs. A lot of my family members actually have done this devils drug,including yours truly. It is a battle to the death, either you go down or the drug does. And fortunately none of my family members ended up dying because of it,but we all went through hell in the process. Ellen in these books explains in the most accurate way I think I've seen anyone explain it. And I have read ALOT of books about drugs. It is terrible if you think about it. When I went through this, thats all i would read. It gave me a twisted kind of high. I was reading books about how peoples lives were going down hill because of it, but all I cared about was how they explained it. Ironic, right? Now if i read these, it does give me a sense of temptation,but it also reminds me of how low I really was. You feel like you hit rock bottom and wont ever come back up. Well, saying that my cousin was way worse than I was, and seeing her go through what she did, I didnt want to end up ten times worse than I already was. As she sobered up, I tried my best to do so as well. I had my moments, but who doesnt?
I was really tiny and creepy looking (I do miss how small i was...and my snake bites. But i think being chubby is better than being freakishly wierd looking )
But,This is why i LOVE ellen hopkins, She writes these books (typically psychological) to help people like me realize, hey what the fuck are you doing with your life? She saw her daughter go through all of this and decided she wanted to help people like my family and me. and I respect her a lot because of that.
Two other great books by her are Impulse and Identical. Theyre pretty crazy too. Impulse also helped me in another way but i wont get started on that.
