Out we went to Thee Parkside last night to see a friend's friend's band, Grand Champenge, play. Nice folk. We played some ping-pong. They are from Austin and were happy it wasn't very hot here.
There was a really awesome all-girl garage group from Mexico. Nothing makes a night like hearing "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog" in spanish. I can't remember what they were called unfortunately.
Then the friend's friend's band played. Fuck. If they hadn't been so nice earlier I would have walked out after two songs. I tried sooo hard to like them....but they suck. They were all technically proficient musicians, but came off like session musicians assembled by some A&R rep to be the "hip sound".....of the mid-nineties. Seriously, ALL their own songs were at the same tempo and sounded like aborted attempts at being Weezer-pop-lite/Bad-Soul-Asylum/Crap.
They also played at least 6 or 7 covers. That's where I draw the line. Sure, throw in a random Beatles or Cheap Trick cover for tongue-in-cheek silliness. Play THAT many covers and guess what? You've crossed over into "cover band" territory....jerk.
Did I mention I had been there since 8pm drinking steadily until they played at midnight? Yeah, that might explain stuff.
So what did we learn last night?
1.Don't trust this particular friend's taste in music....ever.
2.If I can drunkenly beat your entire band at ping-pong...you probably suck.
3.Thee Parkside is a really cool bar, even if the bar-backs bum a bunch of smokes off of you.
hello.
