It is the fifth of June on a Sunday at which I sit here in this musky and beaten room thinking about how I got here in the first place. I dont even bother turning the tv on. Its a little humid; the tiny fan barely helps cool me down. The streets are beckoning me to save them, but I am trapped in this room. Sirens go off every so often as the seconds tick on the clock not giving a damn about the lives of others. I lit up a cigarette, the smoke drifting up caressing my face. These things will kill ya.

I will change names for the sake of identity. This is the boring stuff.

Today was an exceptionally different day. It started off with me waking up by my alarm clock set at seven twenty am. The extra twenty minutes did not help. I only fell asleep after two am.

I chose to be a videographer today. It was Mikes brothers engagement thing. And by thing I mean a full-blown traditional Vietnamese style thing. For this to happen, the to be groom would have to gather his family and bring offerings to the brides home to ask the to be father in law for his daughters hand in marriage. Within the offering, from what I know, you need or should have at least some pig. Since it is the initial asking for the daughters hand in marriage, I do not know if it is the same ceremony as a marriage one.

The offerings are placed in a dome shaped container with a red drape on top of it. I am not related to the groom, but they were short on people so I had to fill in while Timothy was taking pictures. The container that I held was not and I repeat not light. I was trying to balance it on my left hand while trying to record with the camera on my right hand. I must say it felt as if I did a forearm/bicep workout.

And what do you know, her father and family gave their blessing on this soon to be wedded couple. Words were spoken, rings were exchanged, gifts were handed out, and pictures were taken. Afterwards, everyone headed to a restaurant where they would be able to feast on great food to celebrate a joining of two families. These two are about twenty years old.

After the restaurant, we headed back to Mikes house to upload the pictures and videos onto his laptop. We had to clean the memory for the next event. I fell asleep for a short amount of time before I heard Mike and Timothy finishing up. Mike went to the coffee shop while I went with Timothy back to his house for some food.

This is the food from Mikes house, we ate the leftovers: there was plenty! these pictures were taken on Friday.

After a while, Mike showed up telling us, Guess what, I wasnt the only one that was dressed at the coffee shop. A group of guys showed up all dressed, and Susan was telling me that someone else got engaged also. Guess who? He eventually broke down and told us that it was Timothys former crush that had got engaged.

With that in mind Timothy had to check and see how his old crush looks like. It has been several years since he has seen her. Mike said there was one girl that was with the group of guys. I did a little reconnaissance and found out that it was not she. We were all disappointed.

The second videographer job that I had today was to document Mikes brother. His brother had just graduated from school and it would be his first Mass as an ordained priest in a Californian church. Coming from a religious family, this was a big deal.

Afterwards, everyone headed to a restaurant to feast and celebrate a new priest. This time, I ate. The food was edible; not too shabby. I would guess that renting out a whole restaurant for a night is not cheap. There was also live music. All they asked was for everyone to pitch in twenty each. I highly doubt that happened.

Reflections.
Today has been a great insight on traditions and family even though was not my own. It reminded me that even though youre an American, youre still a Vietnamese. Do not forget about your past and where your family came from. Enjoy and embrace the American life, but try not to forget the Vietnamese background because however you do it, you are still Asian inside. Just think on that.

tl;dr: story, videographer at an engagement party and at a friends brothers first mass as a priest. A very traditional day. Dont forget where you or your family came from.

It has been a long day, I did consume some alcohol. Tired, time to end this blog. As Billy and Stan Lee likes to say,

Excelsior!
