I could tell by
the way he greeted me
and the bite of his conversation
that he took me to be
one of them
another fucking scavenger
half-man, right on time
with shoulder and smile
and an eye to lie down in
the settling dust, if she would
only ask it

But no, he was wrong
so wrong I have to laugh

I used to be one of them
In fact I competed
several times over, and I
walked her perimeter
so many times
that eventually I noticed

leave a den of wanton anguish
by crawling out
