it's just occurred to me that most of my recent journal entries are material based, i.e. obsessing about things i bought with money. how vulgar.
that said, look what i finally received!
woohoo! a glorious THING!
Runnin' Through My Bones
by the Tight Bros From Way Back When, a Washington DC quintet. sadly they are now defunct after only 2 albums, but boy did they have it while it lasted... so that's been rockin my small world for the past coupla days.
this here has also put a smile on my face:
The Vesuvius Club
by Mark Gatiss, 1/4 of The League Of Gentlemen. i had no idea he'd written a novel, but i saw an ad on the back of Guide magazine (god bless em) and went straight to Amazon. this is sheer frivolity in light of my recent help-me-pick-a-single-book-to-buy-campaign, but that's me, and Mark Gatiss is Mark fucking Gatiss. plus Stephen Fry says it's great, and besides, i will buy Beautiful Losers too as demanded by you the public.

music... Decimo played in Nottingham for the first time on Friday. great venue, great set, just no fucking audience. it was one of those shows where the only people watching any one band are in fact the other bands playing that night. fortunately it was with our labelmates Deguello and Holiday Stabbings, and we almost enjoyed having the place to ourselves; it turned into a really cosy workshop environment, with everyone trading tips on effects and techniques. it's rare for us to play with bands we have anything in common with, so it ended up being a real pleasure to spend the evening in a cool place with an atmosphere of mutual appreciation. oh, and we did sell a coupla CDs (somehow), and a random guy offered us a show in another Nott'ham venue later this year, so that's good.
then on Sunday myself, Tommy (Decimo drummer) and Rich (guitarist in our other band) had the first full-band session for our new covers project, tentatively dubbed The Bookhouse Boys. we're gonna be playing classic rock, a bit of blues, a bit of country, maybe even a little classic metal. Sunday's rehearsal was dedicated to working on Doors songs, so i got to be Jim Morrison and Ray Neopolitan for the day.
i'd never sung and played bass simultaneously before, but it went really well. in fact i was quite shocked by how well it went; it felt right. anyway, we worked on Waiting For The Sun, Land Ho! and The Changeling, and it rocked.

i was going to post a visual piece from the forthcoming second issue of Rain Over Bouville as a preview, but the modifications i would have to make to the pic file in order to follow the 100kb-or-less rule really ruin the quality of the picture itself, so i didn't bother. but the next issue (due August 1st) is going to be far better than the first.

on Saturday, Rich and i went to a beer festival and tried 15 beers/ciders between us. hell yeah.

i've been reading two collections of short stories: Rock Springs by Richard Ford, dramatic American prose, and Delta Of Venus by Anais Nin, French erotica. the former was a gift from my dad, and the latter i borrowed from my mother, of all people. both are enjoyable and engaging, and at the moment short stories are most suited to my heavily punctuated reading diet.
