!!!ACHTUNG!!!
so, i've had some goodies arriving from the States over the past week. God Bless Amazon.
first of all there was this:
Don Gibson Anthology - 32 tracks of rockabilly and classic country on 2 discs. most of you would probably think it's the gayest thing you've ever heard. you can burn in hell with Michael Jackson (only kidding; i'm kinda glad he was acquitted). FYI, The Don wrote a lot of stuff later covered by Presley, Roy Orbison and Neil Young, among other greats.
and then more recently i received Allen Ginsberg's Howl, a collection bringing together a handful of uber-intense prose-poems and a few lighter, song-like pieces. apparently it caused quite a stir when it was released in the late '50s. it was seized by US customs and a court case ensued to judge the "obscene" nature of the book; thankfully the furore was dismissed after a succession of renowned poets and professors came along and testified something to the effect of "leave the regulation of art to the artists, you pedantic fucking philistines". or at least that's what i would say.
on saturday we (Sextodecimo) played the Charlbury Riverside Festival, a free fest that started life as a humble oasis for bored middle-aged people and their kids, but is fast evolving into a pretty bold project for the organisers. the proof of that is in our being billed as main support (second from the top). it was the best set we've played in quite a while, and we got the best response of the day; screaming, whistling, the lot. crazy.
in other good band news, the 4 EPs split album has returned from being printed and pressed a few thousand times, and it's ready for commercial release (which i believe is at the end of this month). i can't tell you how fucking sweet the artwork looks (it has 4 interchangable covers, you see, one for each band). i'll try to get scans for you to see because our vocalist Steve, who also does all our art, has really outdone himself this time.
if anyone is into adventurous/experimental purchases, the album will cost you only a fiver ($10), and that's for 74 minutes of music performed by 4 very different bands...
anyway, i should do some work. i think that's what i'm paid for.
