SURPRISE

I never believed in
moonlight

Not even in
the village idyll of then
did I stop and notice
the alliance of globes
for the orange pervades
there too

Books
and television told of
moonlight
but
thinking myself astute
I assumed it was
another harmless fantasy

Then one night
while falling home
I understood my path
would not exist
were it not for
and I offered up fine
profanities

Now I know
and by a great white stone
I poke around
for the next
surprise
