We have lost an iconic actress today. Many will know her from playing Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter franchise.
She passed away earlier today aged 89 (3 months short of her 90th birthday).
Her signature Scottish accent comes from her mother, but she was born in East London with an English father.
She has had a very long & distinguished acting career spanning 8 decades starting in 1955 with the latest in 2023. She always said that she would never retire and act for as long as she was wanted and could fulfil the role.
She was nominated for 6 Oscars, winning two.
In 1970, she won the Best Actress Oscar for her role as the lead in The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie.
This was another role as a school teacher.
She won her 2nd Oscar in 1978 for California Suite, along side Jane Fonda, Alan Alda & Michael Caine.
It would seem that she was well suited to authority figures. She was excellent as the Mother Superior opposite Whoopi Goldberg in the Sister Act movies.
More recently she could be seen in the drama series Downton Abbey. She won 3 Primetime Emmy Awards in 5 years for her role as the Dowager Countess of Grantham.
In 2015 she played the role of Miss Shepherd in The Lady In The Van. Based on a true story, it tells the story of a transient lady who is allowed to live in her van in the driveway of a Londoner.
In total, she received 108 award nominations, winning 50 !!
She will be truly missed but her legacy will be loved for generations to come.
