several of us received the saddening news that one of our regulars, and somebody i had come to regard as a friend over the last five years passed away after a long and hard fight with diabetes.
he was one of the most compassionate and giving people everyone had the pleasure of meeting. he was quite, but at the same time always excited to talk to you. always took a minute to say hello and ask how things were in your life. his sense of humor was a bit corny, but in a way only friends tease each other. very familiar. it was so easy to forget that he was even having health problems or was in pain because he always had a damn smile on his face.
he came from a huge family! and they all came to visit him at my work. then the would ask to be seated in my section so i could serve them. i didnt realize that little by little they had started to adopt me.
thursday when i opened the restaraunt, his father came in to speak to me to tell me that Randy had passed in his sleep early in the morning.
so i started my first bartending shift today. and my first customer was Randy. i put out his diet pepsi that he always drank at his favorite seat. and i watered the flowers that sit on the bar at the same seat.
never could an ill thing be said about such a compassionate man, and an emotional support to all around him. i accept that it was God's will and that he is no longer in any pain.
Randy Chodor, you will be missed and we love you very much. thanks for giving me a family.
