your roadkill poem made me giggle, but brought back all the memories of my cats getting hit by cars.
once a car hit my cat but didnt kill it, and i opened the door, and he was bleeding and trying to meow but the wreck had mangled his face. i screamed and slammed the door (i was about 9) and we took him to the vet and the vet fixed him up
although he looked weird for the rest of his life.

Are you maybe thinking of the Ch Caf? That's the only venue that I can think of that has a snack bar, but it's on the campus of UCSD. I guess that counts as suburbia. Anyway, that's the only place I can think of like what you described.
