the scatterbugs had seen what they had to do. they knew their destiny. as they stepped into the new world that had opened up to them, they didnt even have to think about what to do. immediately they began to pick up the hurt. as much as their little arms could carry.
off they went into our world, scurrying about in every corner of the globe. collecting all the hurt they could find and taking it back to the land of the penguintrees. they worked so fast and so well, that in 100 of our years, the world was almost free of hurt. the scatterbugs were pleased with their efforts, and knew the penguintree would reward them in kind.
but then they noticed something disturbing. everytime a person walked past them, they saw little pieces falling off.
it was only now, after all this time, that they realised the true scale of the task ahead of them.
scatterbugs are resourseful little fellows, and they quickly organised themselves well. scatterbugs would go in twos, each pair being responsible for one of us. anytime they say any hurt fall, they would collect it and drop it off at a prearranged site. these sites were cleared once a week by yet more teams of scatterbugs, and soon a tidy system was in place. our world was kept in order.
the scatterbugs kept they system for centuries, doing their job efficiantly. occassionally, a scatterbug would be stepped on and killed - its not our fault, they will be invisible to us after all - but however many died, they could easily be replaced. scatterbugs are also randy little buggers. as time went on and first carts, then cars were invented, more and more were killed in the line of duty, but still their numbers never dropped enough to affect their work.
so we were saved from having to walk around in our own hurt. the lovely little scatterbugs selflessly gave their lives so we could be happy.
but what happened to this hurt you ask?
well, the land of the penguintrees is a big place, and scatterbugs, though many in number, are very small. so the hurt, they thought, would be fine in the land of the penguintrees. it wouldnt be able to hurt anyone where they left it.

but scatterbugs are not alone in the land of the penguintrees, and their neighbours were not happy....
