As for this book and the revelation - I can relate. I'm a highly productive / hard working guy who is a BIG non-conformist. If you can do it, you need to find something that you enjoy and you can do on your own terms. Eventually consulting or running your own business might be a good destination career. Trick will be to find some realm that you are passionate about and are good at.
