My dad taught me to read using comic books.

X-Men, Spiderman, Daredevil, the Avengers, the Defenders, Conan, Red Sonja (these two were kind of weird and embarrassing), Captain America, and Fantastic Four being among the main titles we devoured together.

My favourite will always be Uncanny X-Men.

My most-loved character (unsurprisingly) was Kitty Pryde. I followed her development avidly, through tantrums, name and costume changes, space adventures, devastaing first love, demotion, promotion, and eventually to a whole new team. I was touched by her friendship with Illyana, devasted by Peter's defection, amazed by her strength of character when fighting the Sidrian Hunters and sacrificing herself to the Morlocks for her teammates, and enthralled by her IQ and her ability to fight alongside adults.

Here are some of my favourite moments of my early comic history:

After the Mutant Massacre, I of course followed Kitty to Excalibur. I had the most awesome poster of all the Excalibur characters on my wall as a kid but I can't find any pictures of it online.

I was extremely excited by her romance with a mysterious, dangerous older man:

Kitty isn't the only character I loved and followed, but I'd say she's the one I've had the most enduring love for, and who I connected with most easily as a child.

In my teens, although I still loved and often dipped into my dad's old comics and my Excaliburs (the first title I collected independently of what my dad was reading), I started spending more time on titles like Sandman, Hellblazer, Preacher and Transmetropolitan, which more suited my moods. I also read Gloom Cookie and Wet Moon, and some Dark Knight and Tank Girl.

Currently my favourite ongoing series is Robert Kirkman's Walking Dead. I'm so excited for the TV series I could wet myself!

This concludes "How I Learnt to Read and Other Stories". Its been my longest blog for a while. I thought I'd tell you about something that was such a huge part of my childhood and influenced who I grew up to be smile
