I've attached myself to one guy in the shop as my mentor...and he's got me doing structural work, which I absolutely love!

I just noticed that your fantasy is a '56 Buick century as I started typing this, my '55 Buick special is now blushing.
So I am sorry to hear your not enjoying your life in Cali so much. I will tell you that California was great when I was younger and still in school. But I think that everyone can say that whom still lives there. That state needs to go through a depression which I believe will happen sooner than we all think.
With the music industry suffering because of the internet and the movie industry not doing much better, that state will be in dire straights before you know it and then joe average can come back and "make a living" and still actually live.

on one of my first construction jobs, day one, i was asked to go get the "board stretcher." being the new guy blows, but you earn your stripes. my advice: don't talk unless spoken to, and let your work speak for itself. in almost any trade you will earn respect incredibly fast that way.

Congratulations on your move. What a great story. In 1985 I spent five days on I-80, moving from Pennsylvania to California. It was an uneventful, boring ride but the result was worth it. I'd never go back - I love CA.
