Welcome to the Weekly Comics Hype! I'm doing these alphabetically, but occasionally skipping around a bit. You're no doubt familiar with Charles Schulz's classic strip Peanuts, but you might not know that the good people at Fantagraphics Books have been hard at work on a comprehensive reprint program for the series which is setting new rules for archiving comics in bookshelf format, and you should definitely check it out...

I'm assuming that you know Peanuts already, everybody does. Reprints of the strip have never been scarce, but they've always been haphazard and random as well, assembled by paperback companies into a variety of formats since the early 1960s. Clearly, a comprehensive reprint series was long overdue, and Fantagraphics wanted to do right by Schulz's millions of fans, and have succeeded with this wonderful series.

To begin with, this is the first complete reprint of Peanuts, including hundreds of strips from the 1950s which were never collected after their appearance in newspapers. Each book contains a full two years of strips, with volume one a little larger than the rest since it starts with the first Peanuts strip from October 2 1950 and carries on to December 31 1952.

The presentation is as perfect as a reader could hope for. Each $29 volume is a hardback designed by the celebrated Seth, with matching trade dress across the books. The fifth edition, 1959-1960, was released last month; a new collection is issued every four months and the series will continue for twenty-four volumes. Seriously, these books are beautiful, designed for readers who look forward to finding the shelf space for them. This is the best way Fantagraphics could honor and celebrate Schulz's memory, by making his work available in a format that will last.

And as for the old paperback editions, stock up on those if you have children; they are excellent for road trips!

The Complete Peanuts: 1950-1952 is available your local comic shop , who would enjoy your custom; new books ship on Wednesdays, so why not stop in after work?
