So anyway, some of the guys took a road trip this weekend. mpceccato and sprocketship came by around nine and we were on the highway shortly after. Randy insisted on photographing everything, but he left his camera here; I suppose I'll have pics in a week or so. He took a funny one of me in Chattanooga loading up on Double Cola. (Newcomers to my LJ might be unaware that I REALLY LOVE this stuff; it's only available in Chattanooga and a couple of patchy areas in Kentucky.)
We had lunch at a Jack in the Box in Murfreesboro and got into Nashville for shopping, principally at the excellent Great Escape. We also stopped at a church garage sale which didn't have anything worth mentioning, although there was a well-attended pet blessing at the same time.
The kids ran around that big park (Centennial?) where the Parthenon is and Matt got scores of other games from tailgaters before we moseyed onto campus to walk around for a while. Neely Stadium is much smaller than Sanford, seating 41,000, but it's not without its charm. It was about 90% sold, and the crowd about evenly split between Dawgs and Commodores fans. The only thing everyone agreed on? Great happiness when they announced Florida lost.
Vandy's mascot, "Mister Commodore," is like some lower-rung minor league baseball gagster. There were some yuks about a big TNT detonator while their band played, unimpressively.
As for the game, I dunno... the Dawgs came to life in the last quarter, but that was yet another sloppy win. At least we've stopped penalizing ourselves to death, but our defense just gave Vandy too many opportunities.
The ride home was quite long. Randy took the wheel around Calhoun as I started getting distracted by motel billboards and we got home around 3.10. I still haven't looked over my booty... I got a Jingle Belle collection, and Steve Gerber's Nevada and Luther Arkwright Book 3 for under $7 total, and got the kids some Archie comics. Speaking of whom, they were EXCELLENT all day. I have road warrior kids.
Spent most of Sunday asleep. The kids' mom phoned at 9.40 to ask the score of the game. (Just so you know, I'm a pretty firm believer that on Sunday, good news always sleeps 'til noon, so unless your name is Rebecca or you're arranging NFL plans, don't freaking phone that early.) jtownse had a notion that everybody needed a picnic; this got morphed into "party at Grant's place" and she and her Boyz, David, Lindsey and Emily all came over for sandwiches and to prove that everything Bill Cosby said about parenting is true.
I guess, in retrospect we should have caught Julian starting to get sick last night. He spent part of the day watching PBS and the rest of the day watching The Simpsons and Doctor Who. I spent most of it with him, but stole away to listen to music and read here and there throughout the day. I hope I don't get in trouble for phoning in... I think I'm now out of time until my Christmas vacation.
