Ugh, what a day. And now its so late.

All in all, my day wasnt too bad. Not as bad as my roommates anyways. Unfortunately, he was caught drinking alcohol while on shift, and he was let go. Whats worse is that his girlfriend faced the same fate as well, because she supplied his beverage.

Now Im not here to write a whole lot about something unfortunate like being fired, especially since it wasnt me and it probably isnt my business.

Actually, it probably is partially my business, since we live together (both signed into a 6 month lease). And hes my friend. And he (was) my boss.

What I think is lame about this whole scenario is that its perfectly appropriate. I dont think being fired is cool, and I think it sucks a lot that this has happened to him. Whenever Ive expressed disinterest in continuing work, hes been the optimistic employee-turned-leader that has reminded me of all the little things I love about working there. Hes been the sous-chef for eleven months now, and I know that no matter how bad things got, he would have stayed at least one more (he wanted a year in that position) if given the chance.

Besides, drinking on shift really isnt the worst thing that has happened in that kitchen. Its not like this is the first time anyones had a few drinks while working. On Christmas Eve for instance, I dont think anyone (myself the exception) was NOT drunk during their shift. It was easy work, a slow pace, and everyone wanted to have fun. (If I remember correctly, I wasnt even scheduled to work that day. I volunteered to work for free for lack of better Xmas plans.) Everyone had some yuletide fun, and even if I wasnt boozing myself, I really didnt think it was a big deal for everyone else so long as they could still be safe, sanitary and work well enough.

ON THE OTHER HAND it is illegal. How would you feel if you knew that the guy preparing your meal had just downed three pints? For the past couple of months, the new leaders (as leadership has turned hands) have been a lot stricter about allowing drinks. Unfortunately, my roommate really likes drinking, so hes been able to sneak through the proposed shift-prohibition. And his girl, who also happened to be the bar leader (in charge of alcohol inventory and ensuring that drinks are all accounted for) did the one thing that she shouldnt have when she offered him that free drink.

(It was going to be wasted anyways)

The point is the entire scenario is a stupid way to go. Im really sorry that they had to be let go over something so trivial as this, because I know neither of them were ever impaired enough to inhibit their abilities as employees. Its regrettably appropriate though, because theyve been walking a haughty line for weeks now, and it was bound to happen eventually.

So as good a day as I might have had, there has been a generally morose overtone since this afternoon when all of this went down. The victims quickly self-medicated with some herb, and have since joined me on the quest for a new job.

AS FOR ME PERSONALLY: I didnt do anything exciting today. I spent most of the afternoon napping because of post-dance-night fatigue. Then, tonight was the Lobster Patio Party at our restaurant, so there were many fatalities in that kitchen tonight. As an employee, I wasnt able to opt out (luckily I didnt have to cook any of them personally). I joked with everyone that my first act of vegan-activism would be to release all the lobsters from their boxes in the cooler. I didn't really though. (It was a futile idea anyways: because of the temperature, the lobsters move too slowly to get away, and theres no way I would be able to transport over a hundred of them to any sort of safety by myself. Plus... I'd be fired.)

(Side note: I do think being fired for freeing a hundred lobsters from certain culinary death would be a pretty sweet way to go though...)(As opposed to being fired for other reasons...)

And of course, I was out at Lucky Bar tonight. It was a blast as always! Unfortunately, I found out that my favorite DJ is going to be leaving for Ottawa in about two weeks. Boo-urns.

BOO-URNS! I hate looking outside and realizing just how bright it is already.

Im determined to go see some tall ships today. Ill take pictures.
Sleep now.

Haha, I love using "Boo-urns" when writing. It's funny when something from a cartoon has pervaded the collective conciousness. I mean, everyone knows what "boo-urns" means, even people who are not necessarily Simpsons fans.

I'm feeling slightly better. Staying home on Tuesday was a good idea, because that was the worst by far. I had Wednesday and Thursday off anyway, and I slept in both of those days and took it easy too. I watched Dazed and Confused yesterday (one of my favourites) and I also watched Do the Right Thing, which was fitting, given the crazy hot weather we've been having. It was so hot and muggy, but now it's perfect out, there's even a nice breeze.

You might like I ♥ Huckabees, definitely rent it and check it out, anyway. I can't remember if I noticed Tank Girl on your favourite film list before. I love that movie! Yay for tough cartoon chicks!
