I wrote this to honor my grandfather, Herb himes.

A man, who lived on Midwood St, returned from his tavern one night, alight with spirit.
His footpath, clearly light, was infiltrated by a shining black cockroach.
The man, undeterred, stooped to the insect and implored,

"Cockroach! Why are you here, cockroach!"

The arthropod stopped, stared at the man and proclaimed,

"Why, I am here to eat!"

Their eyes met briefly, and the picayune scuttled away.

The next night, while returning from a volunteer event, the man met the cockroach again.

He boomed,

"Cockroach, why are you here, cockroach?"

The cockroach, remembering the man from the previous night, thought to enlighten the man further.

"I am here to breed," said the miniutum. And it fled.

Finally, after a long weekend of laboring furiously over life, love, and music, the racked man crossed the 6 legged entity's path once more.

Under the amber glow of a Brooklyn lamp powered in part by an antique fuel, carbon, the man and the bug froze.

Staring

Twitching

Ruminating.

At last, as to assume an unerring role, the man sighed,

"Cockroach, why are you here, cockroach?"

Realizing the man was at once ready for his lesson, the son of the earth replied,

"I am here to die every day. i am the earth's son, and it is my son. Within it, I live forever, without it i am nothing. I die every day, so that every day I live." And the cockroach disappeared as nimbly as it had presented itself.

The next morning, on his way to the market, the man noticed the crushed carcass of a cockroach no far from his meeting the night last.

He pondered what the cockroach told him.

Suddenly, from the corner of his eye he noticed movement, erratic, scurrying movement.

In the morning sun a cockroach broke out onto the man's path, not far from his crushed comrade. The insect stopped, twitched, and peered into the man's eyes.

It said,

"Man, why are you here, man?"
