Conditioning

Being the surrogate father of two 7 year olds and working in a customer service position has really opened my eyes to the conditioning society imposes upon itself. In the two short years my brother and sister have been in school, I've seen the trickle down of MTV soaking, consumerism, and gender-clashing self inadequacies all start to take their toll on them. My sister is already self conscious about her hair, her body, her cloths. My brother has no creativity, no vision, no spark. They're already falling into the stereotypes the generation has set for them, materialistic girl and un-evolved boy, thriving off objects and base thrills, they're already almost in a place where society has directed them, a controlled place.

At the same time I get to see what happens at the other end of that road, women who can't do anything for themselves or at least pretend they can't to get attention, "infallible" men who roam the planet on a throne of self-righteousness, completely devoid of any opinion that isn't their own and parading theirs around like a witty t-shirt, as if "I'm ignorant" were scrawled across their chest in white ink on blue cotton.

I'm tired of being an American. I really understand why we're a joke to a large portion of the rest of the world, we're a sickening flock of sheep, media shows us what life can/should be if we do x, y, and z and we eat it up, no will of our own. Meanwhile our government plays world police instead of educating it's people, facilitating it's very demise. One day there won't be anyone educated to run things, they keep us so focused on the material, and the temporary, and the corporeal that we forget the psychological, the environmental, and the spiritual needs of our people. Millions of people run around this country who's lives will end without having done any real good. We show them sex, they do it, they get each other pregnant, don' t have money to educate the kid, ends up flipping burgers, feeding people terribly unhealthy food, they get fat, they're poor, they get hospitalized, they're on state issued insurance, using more money than they pay in taxes, draining other people, and so on and so on and so forth. A never ending cycle of uninspired lives lived by people with nothing to look forward to other than their next drink, next puff, next fuck, all temporary and physical, never fulfilling.

And it's all because, as a society, these are the roles we make available. You can be pretty and popular, born into money and spend the rest of your life caring about yourself, you can be ugly and poor, live your life from paycheck to paycheck, searching for your next high, or you can actually care and be ignored by the people who have been made so content in their place or so afraid of change that it's futile to attempt to reason with them.

I really don't know why I rant about social issues, scientifically speaking, this rock's only got a couple hundred years before it's irreversably uninhabitable.
