Remember the 90's
So 1992 was a fun year. I left St. Mary of Redford, and opted to go to a public school. Got thrown out of Dearborn High for my involvement in the theft of a big boy statue. We loaded it up in an uperclassman's pick up truck, and put it on Fordson High, our rival school's front lawn. Had we not posed for pictures in front of it and sent them to the school, we would have gotten away with it. Instead the picture made it in The Dearborn Times, and we were recognized, and expelled from Dearborn Public Schools. Stupid freshmen. We found ourselves in a Detroit Public school. That was probably the most frightening year of our lives. I know it was for me anyway. It astonishes me to this day how I was never fucked with those 4 years. I was skinny, goofy, and a smart ass, with a canadianish accent. Someone set my girlfriends hair on fire for dating me. They said it was because she was stealing black men away from black women. Fucking crazy times. The nation was just starting to get over the whole Rodney King thing, but there was still this anomosity that minorities carried for others. My best friends hooked up with a group of skinheads, and I was pretty much ousted from after school activities. We still got along, but they were fucking crazy and I kept my distance. Chad Germain got stabbed in the back of the head, and died, and this other guy is doing 20 years at Jackson State. The others from what I hear made it to college. One of the guys went to Ohio State with me, but I'll get into that in 1997.
So my girlfriend transfers to a private school, and my friends are all neo nazi skinheads. I'm pretty much fucked for friends. I'm sitting at home listening to Z-Rock, detroits rockinist rock station, and an Alice in Chains song comes on. That song changed my life. It was "Rooster". You can laugh all you want because I sure as hell do now. That song inspired me to join R.O.T.C. So I did the very next morning. I had to shave off my KidnPlay haircut which was getting tired anyway. I traded my harmony fender strat lookalike for a Yamaha acoustic guitar.
My new girlfriend rented this horrible movie with Vanialla Ice in it. It was called "Zebrahead". It was filmed at the high school that I was the same high school that I was attending. Freaky.
I eventually made new friends at the zone coffe bar in Dearborn. Now at the time I was big into a speed metal band called Dream Theater. I loved John Petrucci's solos. Me and this guy named Donnie Blaire tried to start a band that was similar. Except we would do magic tricks while the lead guitarist did his solo. We were going to call ourselves, The Masters of Illusion. Fuck off, it seemed like a great idea back then. Now you're seeing why I'm amazed at the fact that I never got picked on in high school. Anyway, the band never materialized because none of us could play solos that fast, and so we scrapped the idea. 1993 is going to be more fun to write about, and to read.
