My internet has been down for a few days. I feel like a junkie now that it's back. I was going through such withdrawl! I'm so glad everything's back to normal again.
What I learned while I was away:
1) (Taken from September's edition of Prevention, p. 74) The mighty vitamin folate is acclaimed for fighting many cancers where they start - at the first glitch in a strand of DNA. But adequate vitamin B6 must be present for the folate to switch to cancer-fighting mode, new UCLA research has found. In a study of 1,000 ppl who've had colorectal polyups removed, the researchers found that those who had more folate in their diets had a 39% lower chance of recurrence. High levels of vitamin B6 also cut that risk by35%, probably by helping folate to ensure that DNA reproduces accurately inside cells. BOTTOM LINE: Make sure your multivitamin includes the recommended daily values (DV) of folate (400 mcg) and B6 (2 mg).
Quite interesting, huh? Being that my family, both sides, have had (and some die from) cancer, I think I'll be checking my multi-v out.
2) (Also taken from Prevention, same page) Healthy Heart Cuisine: Until now, vitamins and minerals have been the stars in the constellation of antioxidants known to fight heart disease. But an 8-year French study of 1,300 women has found that those who ate the most flavonoids -- the antioxidants in plant foods -- had just 1/3 the heart disease risk of those who ate the least. Do your heart a favor and load up on these flavonoid superfoods: apples, tea, chocolate, onions, citrus fruits, strawberries, and grapes.
