So much for sitting on the porch tonight. Florida (or at least the corner I'm in) has a distinct odor, of how how shall I put this delicately, raw sewage. It's a stank and a half outside.
I mean Florida can be right pleasant most times. Especially if you're near the coast, but it does have a stink to it sometimes. Although everyplace has it's smell. Winston for example on a warm sumer morning smells like a freshly opened pack of cigarettes.I spent a lot of time in Newport, Rhode Island and that always had that whole ocean air fish smell. Although nothing to compare to Newport, Oregon. And I once drove through Wisconsin at night using mostly my sense of smell. Which is to say Wisconin pretty much smells like you'd expect.
But tonight is pretty vile. I'll be glad to be heading up north soon where it'll just smell cold.
librarian:
All the old people in my family are in Florida now. It's pretty much a given that old midwesterners go there to retire. They know all the same people they knew "up north". Having lived in Oregon for the last 15 years, I can barely handle the Florida sun--it never gets that bright here, so I am immediately blinded and never seem to adjust.

Newport, Oregon is definitely one of the stinkiest places on the coast, with all the fishing boats sitting in the bay, and the whole downtown echoing with annoying sea lion barking. Somehow that adds to the stinkiness for me.

I'll stop before I get to the smell of hiking in the Swiss alps (just like Ohio, but with bells!), though I could go on about smells forever. It's one of my favorite topics. smile No one ever seems to smell everything I smell. And smell is the number one thing that attracts me to people. At least, I think so--the older I get, the less I know about love, attraction, and all that stuff.
