Drown Tonight
(Ophelia's Song)

Lyrics: L.B. Carter
(Dec. 8, 2005)

Down by the babbling creek,
she sits in contemplation.
A red toenail in ice-cold water,
and a slight pout to her chin.

Shell lay back soon
among the guardian oak trees.
And the dogwood will wake her senses,
on a swift yet gentle breeze.

Only nature does truly know,
that behind an innocent facade dwells a darkened soul.

Too old for any pretense,
too young to really care.
Too weak to put up a defense,
and too strong not to dare.
Preferring quiet solitude,
she checks that no one is around.
Because the woman-childs in the mood,
to see if Ophelia can drown.
Drown tonight.

She removes her lace-trimmed dress,
she kicks off each Mary Jane.
Bare and in her element
shes reminded of a repressed pain.

She gathers up some flowers
like a purpose-driven gardener.
Outside the scene is beautiful,
but inside such scenes have hardened her.

The pull and snap of each tiny flower
evokes in her a dangerous power.

Too old for any pretense,
too young to really care.
Too weak to put up a defense,
and too strong not to dare.
Preferring quiet solitude,
she checks that no one is around.
Because the woman-childs in the mood,
to see if Ophelia can drown.
Drown tonight.

Laying face-up in the creek,
flowers her delicate, poisonous frame,
she drifts toward an ancient knowledge,
challenging Death, in this, her game.
Oh but Ophelia, Death holds you down eternally!

Too old for any pretense,
too young to really care.
Too weak to put up a defense,
and too strong not to dare.
Preferring quiet solitude,
she checks that no one is around.
Because the woman-childs in the mood,
to see if Ophelia can drown.
Drown tonight.

Drown Ophelia, drown tonight!
