Dr. Atkins was a big fat pig!

Wow. I know the Atkins diet has been around for a few decades, but this popular method of losing weight seems to really have exploded over the past few years. Well, at least I've taken notice, and for me to have even a remote awareness of any diet fad means it must be fairly prolific. Everywhere you look (even on my computer monitor right now!) the Atkins low carb diet thrives, grows, and festers (well, I don't know about that last one. I just kind of liked the way it sounded.) Now you can even find low carb menus at the most unlikely places such as McDonalds, Carl's Jr., and Subway. Though when you think about it, high protient food items at McDonalds or Carls make sense since there's so much dead animal there anyway. Hell, all one really needed to do before they introduced their low carb menu was simply remove the bun because that's all they basically did.

Anyway, what is the Atkins diet. Hmm... that sounds like a Frequently Asked Question...

The Atkins diet is a low carbohydrate diet that has been proven to be effective in weight loss while not counting calories. The diet can also alleviate or prevent many ailments that are created by, or aggravated by high carbohydrate diets. - Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution

High protien. Low carbs. Simple. Even though those individuls who participate in the Atkins diet (or lifestyle as it is sometimes refered) generally have positive, if slight results, there is no doubt it can be a dangerous weight loss plan. Eating animal products, especially coupled with a reduction in vegetable intake, has been linked with an increase in the likelyhood that one could contract cancer more readily the longer one sticks to the Atkins plan. Additionally, those on high protein diets are more likely to develop heart disease as a result of said diets. These dangers--only two out of many--are generally ignored by the media, and as a result, quickly forgotten by the public. Basically, in order for the diet to work, those on the diet must force their body into a state of ketosis, thereby shocking the body in order to lose weight. I'm just wondering how this is popular. Of course, far be it for the human race to avoid participating in multitudes of activities that are destined to do us harm.

The funny thing is, the Atkins diet obviously did nothing for it's creator, Dr. Robert Atkins, himself an unhealthy 258 pounds at his time of death. He also suffered from heart trouble throughout his life, including high blood pressure, and congistive heart failure, culminating into a heart attack a couple of years ago. It's obvious Atkins is not the poster child for the Atkins diet plan. [Of course, Atkins personal doctors dispute all this, blaming his weight gain on fluid retention during his hostipal stay before his death.]

Each to their own though. I've known several people who have had moderate success on the low carb craze, though I know none who have anything close to what would be thought of as considerable weight loss. On the other hand, another friend of mine has lost an astounding amount of weight through a balanced diet and exercise, and she continues to lose weight on this plan. Go figure.
