Use it or Lose it.

recent forays back into the world of oil painting have revealed an interesting phenomenon. while my experience with oils is limited, i've found that i have lost none of my ability to manipulate the paint as i wish. blending, shading, etc. have not been a problem.

however, my basic drawing skills (which have a much deeper root and background) seem to have eroded significantly with lack of use.

this is a most troubling development. without a good basic drawing underneath, a painting is worthless.

I'm no art expert...but maybe a few shots at copying things for a while will bring about the basic skills again.
Start with simple cartooning, then work in details?

I don't mean to bash Enemy at the Gates or anything; I just think it progressively gets less about truth/realism and more about movie-ness as it goes on.

Was watching some of Jacob's Ladder on TV a couple weeks back. I think it was on Bravo...anyway, way too many commercial breaks or I would've watched the whole thing...very interesting movie, and that rarest of things-- a unique movie. Oh, I've seen the whole thing, btw, years ago, on video...I'm kinda shocked that Bravo has so many fuckin commercials nowadays, if it was indeed them.
