I don't know when it happened, but, at some point, people stopped trying to write the Great American Novel and started trying to write the Great American Screenplay. They were attracted, no doubt, by the lure of fast money. But, then, what American isn't?

Then, one day, the spec script boom went bust. So called "pre-sold properties," such as sequels, remakes, TV show and and comic book adaptations, became the order of the day. Whatever chance the neophyte screenwriter had of selling a script, let alone having it produced, seemed to evaporate overnight.

I know all this because I'm one of these fools, trying to break into screenwriting. Intellectually, I know the odds are against me, but, emotionally, I still cling to the hope of becoming a professional screenwriter.

I really should give up on writing the Great American Screenplay. Even if I wrote it and managed to sell it, the producer would put me through the torments of development hell and ruin the script anyway. Maybe I should write the Great American Novel instead.

One is more likely to be hit by a vehicle while walking than to write a best-selling novel. I know because I'm one of those fools. I blame Stephen King. He did both. I also blame Stephenie Myers. The hack.

It doesn't matter what you write, just write. I can't remember who said it but it went like this: I don't write for other people, I write what I would want to read. Just like screenplays, editors rape the written manuscript. Business always trumps the Arts. One can't escape that in any field. But the concept is wrong. Never set out typing for greatness. That ruins the art before it starts. Just write. I have stayed my hand from writing or making that first brush stroke because, in my mind, I decided this would be the ONE. Lofty aspirations sets unneeded high expectations. Most of the time you don't have to aim that high.

That said, I need to take my own advice. I have been to concerned with writing the great one that I haven't written (or created) at all. I've got the ideas. I just need to enact them.
