I'm one of the most laid back & uncompetitive people on the planet.
until I get on my bike.
I was on my usual 10 mile commute home from work today, just taking it easy, cruising at about 15mph. (I had just done a 10 hour day,its mostly uphill & there was a 15mph headwind
).
so I'm cruising along when I overtook a guy. I glance over my shoulder about a minute later to find him riding on my back wheel. No big deal I thought. I'll just let him follow along behind.
30 seconds later. F**k it. This guy's going down
Flip up 2 gears, head down, accelerate up to 20mph. Couple of minutes pass, look behind.
He's a stubborn b******d. Still there
.
Up another gear,
22mph (which is pretty hard going as I haven't done any road biking in the last 2 months)
I pass the last sheltered spot on my route. The wind is even stronger now. The gradient gets steeper. Legs are starting to burn. But theres no way i'm going to slow down.
Glance over my shoulder.
He's dropped a bit. 15 meters back now.
Grit my teeth. Somehow increase my cadence. My hearts pounding. A sudden gust almost takes my front wheel out from underneath me. But I refuse to slow.
Another glance.
His legs have gone. He's almost at a standstill.
F**k yes.
Shame about the cramp which hit when I tried to get off the bike
whats that song called again?
oh yes thats it
