In 1917 the artist Marcel Duchamp caused a furore when he showed up at an exhibition held by the Society of Independent Artists with a urinal under arm, intending to display it. He declared it was art because he said so. The show was an open exhibition and Duchamp, after paying his $6 entrance fee, could not be stopped.

One of the earliest pieces of conceptualism, and a vivid example of the later institutional theory of art, 500 of the most powerful people in the British artworld--artists, dealers, critics and curatorsvoted Duchamps Fountain this week the most influential work of art of the 20th centaury.

Signed with the name R. Mutt by Duchamp, the work earned 64 per cent of the vote, beating Picassos Les Demoiselles dAvignon, the painting that kicked-off the Cubism movement. into second place with 42 per cent.

The poll, carried out in advance of the Turner Prize next week, included Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin , David Hockney , Charles Saatchi and National Gallery director Charles Saumarez Smith among the voters.

Duchamp was the Damien Hurst of his day. His revolutionary idea was to turn everyday objects into works of art with little or no modification. He named these works readymades.

No matter what you think of it, the furore alone it did and still does cause ensured this work would always be groundbreakingly influential.
