I saw stellastarr* in concert last night.

When I worked in Providence, my boss there knew a ton about underground 80's music. He played it all the time and became my sensei on the muscial culture of that time.
When I was watching stellastarr* last night, I couldn't help but feel like I was back in the 80's. And not in a bad way.
A lot of the bands that were indie or underground then were well produced, had great melodies and solid hooks, but they just weren't mainstream for one reason or the other. Becuase back in the day, The Cure, R.E.M., Echo and the Bunnymen, and others were never played on the radio. Even U2 was barely even played, except for on college stations.
Stellstarr* reminds me of that really well done 80's sound. It was cool feeling like I was in on something that was really good, yet comparatively unknown. The little treasures of quality music.
The couple standing directly in front of me at the show were so stereotypically bridge and tunnel it was astounding. I couldn't figure out what they were doing there. The dude was throwing out random "sign of the devil"s with his hands (you know, the horns, when you do hang loose without the thumb).
This guy seemed like a total tool, but I talked with some people who knew the band in college, and it turns out this guy, Gino (no joke), used to be in the band in college but hooked up with the lead singer's girlfriend. It was eight years ago, but Gino still regrets it becuase it blew his chances with the group.
Goddamn right, Gino!
Just to give you an idea what this guy was like, he was telling us how things were going in his life:
"Yeah, well, things were going pretty good, but then there was the dot com bust."
(What? Who says that in 2004?)
"But, you know, I'm doing okay now because I got a house right next to the Meadowlands."
(People from around New York should understand why that's funny.)

Straight outta the Soprano's, I swear.

Afterwards, the girl who got the free tickets took us to a promo party. Spinning there was none other than the man himself, Mr. DJ Jazzy Jeff! He chose good tracks and did some cool spinning tricks, which I had never seen live. I had to get out of there becuase everyone was dancing way too mellow, and these tunes made me want to get down, hard. Broke my heart.

And here's one of the pics I made for this video. It's animated and everything.
