Are we made for relationships?
As I was just sitting on my balcony, doing my good morning ritual of rolling a cig, warming my hands on my coffee mug, a friend passed by my house. She and her husband only got married a year ago, have a beautiful child - after they've been told that they can't have any - and now she said that they're having a crisis and thinking about separation.
Is the model of marriage as it used to be, you meet someone, marry and live happily ever after, outdated? Why is it that a lot of people seem to not being able to hold on to someone for a long time anymore? Are we too easily attracted to others? Do we give in too quickly? It's so easy meeting someone else. Flirting, teasing and then it's often just a little step towards a first kiss and bam, there goes your relationship.
100 years ago, or even less, there were rules set by society, "you don't do this", and they were just not questioned. Divorce was no option. You were bound together forever, went through good and bad times, laughed and fought together.
How is it today? Oh, we encounter a problem, hey, I just fuck off because sorting it out and fighting for something takes a lot of energy and there's millions of people, I just find someone else to be with.
Are we giving up too easily? Or is it more a back to the roots thing when humans could barely walk on two feet and just mated for reproduction purposes? We want fun all the time but no responsibilities.
Relationships are hard work. And they include tough times. But also so much pleasure and happiness.
Being alone has its advantages, too. Freedom. Total independence. One-night stands. But also loneliness and longing for someone to cuddle beside you on a cold winter night.
And what's with open relationships? You have a partner who loves you and cares about you but when you are a little bored or just feel attracted to someone else you allow eachother to share an intimate moment with someone else. Can that work in the long term? I know a couple for whom this works. I don't know if it could work for me. At the moment I just prefer to being by myself. I have friends, I like being alone, doing whatever I want to whenever I want to and luckily always find someone when I need the kind of warmth your friends cannot give you.

Well, what a morning! I guess, I'll be thinking about this for a little while longer.

Personally I think marriage is a horrible institution. It places incredible societal pressures that are unrealistic at best. You're made to stand in front of a preacher you had to pay to be there, then swear an oath to a God you probably don't even believe in, and then be forced to stay with someone that you've barely gotten to know. And then after all that, you have to register yourselves to the government. That alone is enough evidence that marriage is a bad decision. And the fact of the matter is that most people can't even stay in a cell phone contract for longer than 2 years. So how on earth do you expect to make a lifelong commitment to another person?

It's just doomed to fail for most people who aren't truly in love. And even if you are in love, why do you have to get married to prove that point? I've always felt that its more of a show than a serious event. Just a prom for adults. But that's just my opinion. whatever
