Man you haven't lived until you have been with your friends trying to buy fireworks in little Mexico. The best part is, I don't speak a word of spanish. My best interpretation for fireworks was "fuego auaras?" I think it means fire in the sky or fire in the air or something close to that. I started out most conversations with "not policia!" HAHA
This is the side of town where I could buy a black market baby if I wanted one, and people looked at me like I had 3 heads asking for fireworks. Luckily doing a whistling noise followed by an explosive hand gesture let them know what I was talking about, and seemingly was lame enough to comfort them into knowing I wasn't the fuzz.
Oddly enough I was pointed in the directions of 2 English speaking guys who would have prefered if I paid them in weed. I didn't have weed, only money. I told them money could be used to buy weed, and that fireworks, though a hot commodity now may not pay the chronic bills in the coming month.
Finally with a dirty yellow Shoprite bag in hand, we were ready to set off our procurement. I placed 3 bottle rockets in an empty Hieneken bottle and twisted the wicks and lit. The 3 of them shot proudly into the night sky and with 3 pops there were gone. Having probably heard their send off a nearby neighbor exclaimed "LAME." I couldn't help but agree...
