This is from a great blog. Open Letters To Pundits This guy writes responses to those jackass pundits on the AM dial. This one is to Michael Savage and his show The Savage Nation. Whatever the fuck that means. Enjoy! biggrin

Michael Savage - opiate for the masses? (6-20-5)

On Savage Nation - Dr. Savage hung up on a caller for what he claimed was his lack of logic. But he'd outright refused to listen to the answer to his question - and in so doing wore his pre-set position on his shirt sleeve...a highly-ironic place to put it while attacking someone for being illogical.

Dr. Savage:

You couldnt have been more blatant in your willingness to override logical thought than you were Monday night at the end of the call about opium in Afghanistan. The caller said that BEFORE the Taliban Afghanistan led the world in opium production. That DURING the Taliban opium production dropped drastically. And that SINCE the fall of the Taliban opium production has spiked to higher levels than before its production was banned. You asked the caller if he meant to imply that opium had something to do with our invasion of Afghanistan and he said that yes, he thought it had. He then went on to say that it was ironic, because the U-S had helped put the Taliban into power in the first place during our proxy wars with the Soviet Union...and you jumped on him! So if we got them OUT to keep opium production UP but put them there in the first place which kept opium production DOWN which way is it? (you screamed) You cant have it both ways, you moron! (you screamed some more and hung up on him as he began to try to answer your question) You claimed his lack of logic as evidence of his simplistic viewpoint.

Well it seems to me that any logical person wouldve asked if the Taliban had ALWAYS banned opium? Or had they come to power with no such position only to modify their position somewhere along the way? Hmm...

By not asking that next question - it seemed crystal clear to me that you had pre-determined your conclusion and held fast to that conclusion in the face of potentially solid logic. You refused to accept another piece of the puzzle which if added would possibly have painted a clearer picture. You CLEARLY exemplified once again your willingness to put forth your own agenda.

And I dont mean to imply the caller was right that opium was necessarily the reason we invaded Afghanistan. But surely you can agree that when delving into a theory leaving no stone unturned is the only way to go. Last night you picked up one of those stones and threw it away for what reason, only you can know.

Heck, I new very little about the Afghanistan-Opium connection until last night but even your shortsightedness (or attempts at hegemony?) was enough to make me take a closer look. I appreciate it. Oh, and by the way, my brief search found that the Taliban came to power in 1996 then banned opium in 2000. Thats a pretty nice puzzle piece, Id say.

The farmers' decision not to plant opium poppies stems directly from a simple decree four months ago by the supreme leader of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban movement, Mullah Mohammad Omar, who declared in a radio broadcast that growing opium poppies was against sharia, or Islamic law." Boston Globe December 8th - 2000

Thanks!
