so, on our beloved newswire, there's a big deal about the writers' guild of america strike. it seems that there are literally several dozen members who write for tv shows. so i read a lot about the strike in there.

the terrible thing is, aside from adult swim, there's nothing worth watching on tv and there have been enough truly good movies made by hollywood or any other entity that abides by wga contracts to count on one hand in the last five years.

this all, of course, goes by excluding creator-writers or writer-directors, when it comes to movies. it just seems to me that while kevin smith or peter jackson and his two friends can write amazing full-length movies, do it entirely their way and prove that the studio heads are clueless in the process, it somehow takes a staff of fifteen-plus writers to fill a half-hour tv show up. and that's really only 22 minutes or less because of advertisements. and making that matter worse is that 75% of those shows are astonishingly bad. not just unentertaining, but horrible. for example, try watching "the war at home."

and i refuse to believe that this has to be the norm, or that it's not possible to do it like writer-directors do with films. look at rodriguez or tarantino. then look at brendon small or john kricfalusi. see the similarity? two amazing moviemakers, two amazing cartoon creators. it's possible to make good tv without a full ship's complement of writers. so why doesn't anyone do it that way in hollywood? if we had shows where the creator pours all their blood, sweat and tears into the project and the studio heads stayed the fuck out of it and just counted the damned money, we'd have quality shows, successful studios and hopefully well-paid creator-writers. oops, that's right. they did that. and futurama and firefly both got cancelled.

not to mention all the mediocre writers of bad shows could devote more time to finding something they're actually truly good at. maybe if we fire everyone and make them re-interview for their positions (like the bobs in office space) they could cull the weaklings and fix the problem they've found themselves with.

anyway, happy Holiday, fellow pastafarians. and to all christians celebrating christmas, i say this: you're all celebrating a pagan holiday bent to portray the birth of a man claiming to be the son of a made-up god. good job. at least i know my god is made-up. dumbasses.

later.
