Hope and despair - the experience of the 1930s and the crisis today

Feature by Noam Chomsky, December 2008

As he reaches his 80th birthday this month, Noam Chomsky looks at Barack Obama's victory, today's economic crisis and his memories of a childhood shaped by the 1930s Depression.

I'm old enough to remember the Depression. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of people coming...

My limiting factor here is time and money. The bus we are planning on towing, but I'm supposed to drive my geo. I'm planning on pulling the crank, with the engine in the car. Tthe tolerances were good when I first put in the main bearings. also, would those bearings create a knock? When I drove her the second time, she drove fine aside from a shifting problem, but after I seated the piston rings and was on my way home, she started to knock only in 4th with a little bit of throttle, and I could feel it in the gas pedal. No throttle or full throttle she was fine. It gradually got worse to the point that she was knocking all the time. I finally got her home. I talked to some people that suggested it could be bearings, not bent valves as my boyfriend had thought. The next morning I started her up. I could not audibly hear a knock, but I listened through a screwdriver at differents points on the valve cover, I could here some noise, nothing that seemed too detrimental. I listened at the oil pan, around 1/2 cylinders was about the same, but it was really loud around the 3/4 cylinder, so I shut her off and removed the oil pan and took off the main caps. The shifting problem I mentioned, she idles just under 1000pm, but if I try to go in 1st she drops to around 500 and wants to die, even at full throttle. Once I get up to about 20mph or so, I can shift into 2nd and she drives. If I shift into 3rd, she revs up like I downshifted. I do have an idiot light to tell me when to shift up (like I need it tongue ) and it wanted me to shift into 4th doing 25. It seems to me like 1st and 3rd got swapped, but if I try to start to go in 3rd its worse. I was told by one of my old auto teachers that the thrust bearing looked like it was caused by riding the clutch. I think it was by trying to move!

As far as the bus, we got new cap, rotor, points, condensor, can't remember on plugs/wires, since it's been a year. The new points broke while we were driving her, so we put the old one back on. Trev synced the carbs, he was going to adjust valves tonight when he got home. But I'll let him know about checking plugs and stuff first....

When I had everything torn apart and out of the car, I did pressure wash the block and blow dry her with the compressor. I don't have a cherry picker or anything to just lift the engine out, last time the head was off and I dropped the engine/tranny to floor and slid it out, I don't have time to do it again. And did you mean checking the crank journals? the oil pump is brand new, and by screen the oil sump? I can' t think of any other screen....Yeah, I know it could be much worse, that's what I am thankful for! And with the block in the car and everything attached but the oil pan, what would be the best way to clean oil passages? I should have taken the block to get cleaned while it was apart, but I didn't think about it....

Okay, okay, I guess I have some things on my to-do list, but they're not "resolutions". Resolutions are things you really mean for about a week, then forget about, like... quit smoking and drop 20 lbs or pay off that student loan or reconcile with my dickhead brother or otherwise "get my shit together".

I'm going to finish this amplifier and get paid for it....

Sorry.
Did you put that vid up in the Motorcycle Group; `Brit Iron` thread
as well?
I was just there and last posting was back in Sept., it`s now on
page 2.
Next spring once I get my Bike out there is a dyno place near
to me. I might try for a little more ooomph to compensate for the Hack.

Hey dude!

A slightly late.... happy new year!

Some odd administrative hiccup resulted in my account here going inactive for a week or two.. but it seems ok now. ;-).

A good to-do list! I want to do the more riding thing also. But today a quite heavy snowfall here in West Sussex means that will have to wait a little while yet. Anyway.... hope your week is starting well.. take it easy.. and spk soon!

All the best,
mark. wink smile

I know what ya mean. That is why I try to be outside as
much as I can. 20 of the acres are in swamp, which is fun
to go SnowShoeing thru. And A. said that she`s getting tired
of the swamp, so once she`s use to the new Shoes there are
alot of trails nearby that can be Hiked. Then there is the pile of snow
at the end of the driveway that is excellent of snowtunnels.
And a small sleding hill out back.
Actually `Mud Season` is the worst part of it; too warm for Snow
stuff and too mucky for anything else.
I used to drive for an outfit outside of Tulsa and I can see how
Winter could be alot of No Fun in your area. Good luck.

I'm fucking miserable.

I hate winter.

I'm sick as a dog, nose all stopped up, sneezing and coughing.

My amplifier isn't working right, and I can't figure out why. I've been spending long hours out in the shop and I think this has lead to my present illness. Even bundled up with layer upon layer of clothing and two little heaters going out there, it's...

Me too. We should all go in live in Arizona. En serio.

Well, very best wishes for a swift recovery! I think i've had similar symptoms for the past two weeks too.. I'm pressing on with training and stuff (did a half marathon on Sunday) in the hope that i can sweat-it-all-out, or something...

Hey, and good luck with getting that amp up & running!

Bizarely enough.. it's kinda warm here... 10C in Brighton this morning (50F i think, mas o menos)..

Any plans for Christmas? I'm locked in home with a bottle of champagne and some food supplies right now. Planning on doing a half marathon tomorrow morning.. and then maybe some work stuff in the afternoon.. i don't mind. Everyone cool is away for a few days, so i may as well be productive.

For example, my best pal Kateriina with whom i seem to do everything these days is back in Finland for the holidays.. but she's going to skype me tomorrow.. which will be cool. In other news.. the Princess of Spain called for two hours this afternoon.. threatening to come back to London in two weeks... she bought me lots of presents for my b'day last weekend too... including a ring, of all things. Does this mean we're engaged? Not whilst i have my strength, buddy...jejeje....

Anyway, take it easy dude, have a great day tomorrow... and speak soon!

I have a 91 Geo Storm that blew a head gasket. I took off the head to find that a head bolt was loose as a whore....then decided that since I was getting the head resurfaced and new valve seals and all that I should probably do the bottom half as well, and good thing, too! My clutch was shot. I ended up getting a rebuild kit, new water/oil pump, timing belt, few bolts. My boyfriend was bored and wanted something to do, so I told him he could clean the ring grooves on my pistons. He soaked them in super clean and etching the hell out them, so I got new pistons too. It's been a slow project. I could have had it done months ago, but I've been pretty lazy. All I have to do now is lift the block/transmission back up into the engine bay and attach the mounts, then pay for the head/fuel injectors and hook up the components. Since I don't have a cherry picker or anything, I ended up taking off the head/air plenum, then lowering the block/tranny to the ground and sliding it from under the car. It's been a fun project, and I know I could have just sold it and got another car for less than I'm paying to rebuild this one, but it's my car and it's a few bucks here and there, vs paying a lump sum for a different car and who knows what I would have ended up with quality wise. This is the most work I've ever had to do for her in the last 3 years, and now I can make sure the maintenance is done great from the get go...
