Location Virginia, between Haymarket and Marshall on Route 66, 12-19-2004.
Was driving back from my weekly off-roading outing (drove Tuskers Gap, GWNF). We parked on a ridge and climbed to a watch tower to see the snow rolling in. It was late afternoon and dark by the time we got back onto pavement. Heading back toward Washington D.C. we came upon a ambulance heading east on 66. Following a couple miles and a medium fire engine was running full-lights west on 66 and I noticed the decided lack of traffic west bound. Right as we came out of the mountains is when we saw the long line of headlights and flashing lights in the distance. Visual total was one car in a ditch then one hundred yards down a Ford conversion van was in the median, a little further down a tow truck doing something on the shoulder (couldnt see through the stopped cars) and then a long line of stopped traffic and on the shoulder was a heart stopper a large fire engine flipped with its top buried in the mountain side.
Words cant express the feeling after seeing that. Accidents are one thing, accidents involving EMS personnel responding to a call
