I think if i remember corectly the guy was having a garage sale and my friends Adam and Justin (who's studio it is) saw he had PA speaker stands for sale so he went back to get money to buy them and they were sold already. But they got to talkin and one thing lead to another and he hired him to play on some (awful) pop rock tracks. . .well i hate pop rock so 'awful' is of course my opinion but. . . anyway, i dont know how much he charged a day, but i know he did give them a break because they're both in school still. Although the "studio" is in my friend Adam's parents' basement, in LARCHMONT, and Justin's parents live on West 96th in manhattan, so it drives me crazy when i know that neither of them have or have had jobs, yet have at least $20,000 worth of equipment in 2+ rooms in a house. and thats an undershoot of value. (i'm definitely not going start griping about the Skill Level/Amount of Equipment ratio when you compare them and I . . .after all, he is a good friend of mine and i love him to death and wish the best for him)

Meanwhile (this should answer your question about what i use) I'm crammed in the corner of my parents basement (temporarily) using ProTools LE w/Digi002 on my 1.25 gHz dual G4 and the rest of my stuff that i had to buy myself. I also have a PC running Reason (not the new version cuz i'm a schmuck and dint register to get the upgrade but wahtever) out of a Midiman Omni I/O. As far as mics i have 2 SM57s, 1 Beta 52, 2 AT 4033's, and a Studio Projects C3. I still need some stuff to get everything going perfectly. . . although i'll never actually have everything i need . . . i think thats it
