I saw a great gig last night at the Sydney Festival Bar - a French five piece called Java. I can't really describe what they play - kinda gypsy/hip-hop/rock fusion that somehow just works. I've never seen a band carried by an accordian before but they sure had the place pumping. Find their music and listen to it!
I've been lucky with the festival so far. Last week I went to see Naqoyqatsi at the Opera House with Philip Glass and his ensemble playing the score live. Another amazing production - I was just about crying through parts of it with the combination of the intense imagry and the even more intsense music. I saw Koyaanisqatsi done in the same way about two years ago, but at the time I smoke a big joint in the Opera House forecourt then scampered in to my seat. I'll probably never say this again but I think being stoned ruined that experience. I sat there amazed, but seeing the third in the trilogy straight was a much more rewarding experience. With any luck the performance was successful enough they''ll take it to other cities around the world.
I'm off sailing tomorrow. I'm skippering a boat load of slackers on a boys weekend around Broken Bay and the Pittwater. Last time I went with the same crew I had an incredible experience standing on the deck during a huge thunderstorm. I can remember seeing lightening striking in every direction as it went past us - we were anchored in America Bay on the Hawkesbury - and being stoned enough to become convinced that the lightening was striking in an exact off-beat sequence to the Leonard Cohen music that was drifting up from the saloon. It's one of my favorite memories.

Have you ever worked a season at the snow.
I'm thinking about it.
