Well that was relatively painless. My mom has mellowed with age.
I, however, had to put into full effect the conversation techniques I've learned on my travels.
99% of the people out there aren't interested in talking about anything but themselves or their experiences. I've discovered that if you do nothing but ask open-ended questions most people walk away thinking they've just had a fantastic conversation when in reality they just got to talk about themselves for 15 minutes, an hour, whatever. I'm not saying this is a bad thing at all as long as you have an attentive listener, something which I try to be.
It is among my top ten fantasies, however, to be engaged in a conversation with a woman whith whom I share a mutual attraction and have this fantastic conversation where' we're both really interested in what the other person is saying. Where we're listening and not waiting for our turn to talk (cliche, but oh so nice when you find it).
Being a listener is not a bad thing, but to be an actual conversationalist is sublime.

i only gain it at rare moments
i have to say i get very annoyed when people use you as an open journal page
