Aristote said that because we need the company of others humans to grow up, to learn how to walk, how to talk, how to use our hands (it's like Rousseau's thought here). Without it people could grow up, but not as "complete" humans.
There's a story which can explains/approves that, in France in 1750 (I'm really not sure at all of the date), there was children abandoned in the wood (because of starving, economical/historical problems) when they were maybe 1 or 2 years old. One of them survived, and people of the society tried to learn to him how to talk/use his hands (especially) and he simply couldn't, he physically couldn't. I think there was a film/book made of it, but I can't even remember the name of this child, I'll search it if you're interested.
So Aristote is here talking about the 1st society in which humans are (Rousseau will say it's the family by the way), and I'm reducing it to the life in general, but Aristote never said it was impossible to be a hermit and to live by ourselves
And yes, i've eve, talk to a mother who believe that the 10 1rst days of the life of a child are very important, she thought his child had some.. well not an eating disorder, but he ate far too much, because in his 10 1st days, he didn't have enough to eat.
It's strange how people evolve with time !
