Screech died today.
He had had a tumor and it had led to severe anemia, and there was nothing that could be done. I stayed with him in the specialists office while he died, and talked with him and held his head in my hand so he would know he wasn't alone.
He was the best-natured being I have ever known... and the bravest. He purred for me this morning, and he purred when they drew blood, and when they shaved him for the ultrasound. I think he cared enough about me, and about the other silly humans around me, to be trying to say that he knew we were doing what we could and he appreciated it. And to be standing on the edge of forever without complaint, and to face it so that those that are with you are not devastated... that's more than many of us silly humans achieve.
