Welcome to Poughkeepsie, New York and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Mid Hudson Bridge.

Were in the middle of the Hudson River or, more accurately, about 150 feet (46 meters) above it. What are we doing here? Well

I got an email from someone else that I havent seen for a few years. We used to work together back when she was still in school, but then she moved away after graduation. Now shes back in the area for the weekend to deal with some fun family issues. She took time out from her busy schedule (and I from my life of leisure) and we got together for lunch. Its good to see old friends especially the ones that I think about and really miss.

I had to cross the Mid Hudson Bridge to get to the restaurant and, of course, to get back home again. I love bridges. I love driving and riding on them, and I really love walking across them. I do so every chance that I get. Ive actually come close to getting killed a couple of times on bridges that were not meant to be pedestrian friendly, but those are stories for a different day

I decided to stop for a while and to walk back and forth over this bridge a few times. I'm glad that I did. It was a breezy, beautiful afternoon and I immensely enjoyed the sunshine, fresh air and exercise.

See that other span? Thats the historic Poughkeepsie Bridge. It is 6,771 feet (2063 meters) in length and was the longest bridge in the world when it was completed back in 1889. It carried railroad traffic for 85 years until it caught fire in 1974. It has been closed ever since. You can probably see the construction equipment atop it. It's going to be reopened later this year as a pedestrian walkway! I cant wait.

The rest of the week has been great too lots of hiking, reading and watching DVDs. Remember the raccoon from my previous blog? Hes gone! The used cat litter did the trick. Im guessing that the big, crazed, sleep-deprived maniac that burst out of the door and chased him across the yard may have made him fell somewhat less than welcome as well. Things are back to normal.

I always went for the dark literata being angsty in the corner. I agree that many people you meet these days didn't get any more mature than the 10th grade. Reading your blog and comments I should think you'd be surrounded by a large circle of intelligent, well-grounded friends. Then again, calm waters do tend to draw dinghies.
