I remember the first concert I went to. It was KISS, and my friend Kevin T. and I had begged for weeks to go, until finally his mother gave in and said she'd take us, but only if we went to one of HER concerts with her....
REO Speedwagon sucked, but anything was worth it to see KISS live on stage, Gene spitting fire and singing "God Of Thunder".
Great great memory.
This past monday, I ushered my son into what will become his version of this memory. And luckily, there is no soft rock band waiting in the wings as payment.
I took him to his first real live rock concert, to see his favorite band, Dragonforce.
Now, I knew he was going to have a magical night, but didnt know how great it would be for him.
We both hated the first band that came on, and believe me, when a 10 year old takes the time to say, "Wow...these guys suck.", it's meant wholeheartedly. We both enjoyed the second band, Turisas, who I hadnt even heard of before they hit the stage. Their sound is something I'd describe like a group of gypsy vikings gathered together around the fire after a long day of raping and pillaging, cavorting and drinking huge tankards of grog while singing their own praises....they had a dude on electric fiddle and a chick playing accordian! In a METAL band!
As Turisas rocked the crowd, one of the guitarists and the keyboardist from Dragonforce happened to walk by, and of course, CJ recognized them. As they passed, the guitarist reached out and high five CJ, saying "Hey buddy!". CJ stood there, mouth agape, staring at his hand when they walked away...he looked at me and said, completely serious, "Dad...I am never washing this hand again....".
I was so happy for him. He got to high five someone from his favorite band at his FIRST concert! How cool is that?
But wait, theres more....
Dragonforce hit the stage and tore the place up, as usual. This was my fourth or fifth time seeing them live, and they NEVER disappoint. CJ was loving it...jumping up and down, singing along, pounding his fist in the air and throwing up the horns. At one point, Herman Li, lead guitarist for Dragonforce and arguably CJ's favorite player in that favorite band, looks over at me and CJ. Now the two of us were standing near the backstage entrance, which was cordoned off, and gave us a full unobstructed view of the stage, so as Herman is playing, there is nothing between us that would block his view. He looks at me first and motions towards my little 10 year old, who is jumping up and down, whirling like a dervish and singing at the top of his lungs....I mouth the words, "He loves you guys!".
CJ looks up, and right as he and Herman, his guitar hero lock eyes, Herman gives him a huge thumbs up.
The crowd near us turns and looks directly at CJ, wondering what Herman is looking at and gets a view of my son, standing there jaws open, looking like he might faint.
CJ screams at the top of his lungs, "THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!"
And at that moment, I knew...this day will be his forever. No concert will ever compare.
I'm glad I got to share it with him.
