Studying too fucking much brain hurts sometimes need a breakkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.
I have been revisiting Elliott Smith's Either/Or and Elliott Smith albums for the last hour or so. Was I the only one who thought his music was his therapy?, his release? I always hoped it would keep him alive, but now realize it was all an elaborate and beautiful suicide note.
This proposes a serious, intriguing question, are all of the great artists tortured? Is...

i had a similar discussion with a friend of mine the other day. i think we arrived at the conclusion that artists are (for the most part- there are exceptions to every rule, of course) inherrently self-destructive. this however is coming from two artists, one of which (myself) has spent quite a bit of time in the old looney bin, and both of whom have struggled with various and sundry addictions for the past 10 or 15 years. so maybe our opinions are a bit biased due to personal experience...
but to (try to) answer your questions:
i don't think being psychological, emotionally, or otherwise fucked up necessarily means you're a good artist, or an artist at all. being open about yourself just means you're honest, and nothing more. and while honesty is an admirable trait, as is the ability to be open and share one's self with others, it's not what defines greatness. i mean, go to an open mic poetry reading. 90% of the stuff you'll hear is pretentious crap. just because you're up there "baring your soul" doesn't validate your art. i like the term "emotional exhibitionism", though... i think that hits the nail on the head.
it is exhibition, and people have different reasons for doing it- whether to boost their egos, get attention, or simply communicate. (i prefer to think that i do the latter, but i'm too cynical to believe that myself or anyone else is without another motive, whether consciously or not.)
uhg. ok, sorry i've cluttered up your journal... especially sorry if you were posing the questions hypothetically...
i'll stop now.
love,
-Hyena.

what the fuck, i can't fet a date for 2 months, then i have three girls chasing me at one time. it would be easier to choose a potential partner if i wouldn't have 3 women calling me that i am equally interested in calling me at once.

I had a great weekend. The girl I am seeing came in from NOLA for the weekend, so we got to hang out Saturday and Sunday. We went to my brother's bday party and then we check out some live music. A NOLA band played (Reception Is Suspected) and it was a wild show. Hopefully I can make a New Orleans trip this weekend.
Okay, the brake problem has turned worse, then better, the worse again. I got parts for $300, found someone to work on it for $150. That's much better than $1000. But as luck has it, they couldn't fix the entire problem and I had to take it to someone else. Now I will have to dish out another $100. And still no financial aid check...

just remember that you're paying a lot more for your school than for the booze...
oh, did you go to cat power? i heard she was awful...
gosifer:
no i couldn't make it.i hear cat power is usually not that great live, which sucks because i love her music. i am hoping that someone will drive with me to see the cramps wed.
I am fucking pissed. I spent $150 on a new skateboard, $150 on a new printer, and $150 on a new scanner all in hopes that I would get my full student loan. I got 1000 less than I expected. Then my brakes went out today and the estimate is $1000. What the fuck, how am I supposed to get the money?
This weekend was great. I went to New Orleans b/c it was the last weekend before school starts. Friday I stayed in Lafayette for a going away party, and I met an amazing girl from NOLA. We hung out most of the night, but as fate has it, she was staying in Lafayette until Sunday afternoon and I was staying in NOLA until sunday afternoon....

I'm finally taking a trip to mexico this weekend, I am way overdue. The last time we went was July 4th of last year (kind of funny- cinco de mayo in the U.S. and July 4th in Mex). My friend has a ranch in SW Texas that we will hang out at for a few days. It is fucking amazing, scorpions, rattlesnakes, deer, jackrabbits, african...
