Mardi Gras season is over. Whew. It wasn't as wild as years past, but lots of fun was had. Wed night we had drinks. Thur night people really started cutting up, and my brother's band played downtown. Friday night there was 7 bands at Grant St. so the partying was full force. Parades were going on all evening, some tuns of drunk stragglers were wandering....

Quote of day, Wendel Berry
"If we think of infinite energy as immeasurable fuel, we are committed in the same thought to its destruction."

This quote is from an amazing environmental awareness book called The Unsettling of America.

Other than that, everything is okay. Not great, okay. I guess its better that fucking depression fit I had a week ago. Thankfully that only happens 2...

I lost my shit last night, but thankfully i don't take my problems out on others. I think my significant other would rather it deal with me freaking out on her than to myself, which I find strange. I think she got pissed because she knew there was nothing she could do to help.

I don't know why, but I am hellbent on controlling my...

You're on the list!!
If you got this message, it means that you expressed interest in Bucky's idea for the CD swap, but haven't responded yet (as far as I know). This is your wake up call, email Bucky with your info NOW!! Otherwise you will suffer the consequences and they will be dire consequences indeed! This is a great idea and should be ten buckets of fun, so get your ass over to Bucky's profile and send him an email with answers to the questions he asked in the CD SWAP thread. That is all, you are now dismissed.

Hot Snakes fucking ripped tonight. Strange evening. We couldn't borrow anyone's car so we took mine. Left a half an hour late, ran out of gas as soon as we got to Tchapitoulas St., then had to call a friend to bring us some petro. We didn't see the first band, tough titty. Then the girl I was seeing wanted me to come over after...

Where did you hear that? Lafayette is pretty safe as far as I am aware. It's no Austin, but I never hear much about violent crimes. Maybe it is because I never watch local news. That and the fact that I never take into consideration the stupid/drunk rednecks that are always fighting.
hyenahell:
it was on the local news a couple weeks ago. nola is projected to have the highest murder rate per capita in our great nation this year. i'm thinking it might be time to move. wink

I barely slept at all last week. Average was about 4 hours a night, due to studying. Yesterday I fell sick, and today I missed all my classes. I fell asleep last night at around midnight and woke up today at 5:45 pm. That adds up to almost 17 hours of sleep. Now I feel much better. I need a cigarette but my throat is...

I have been revisiting Elliott Smith's Either/Or and Elliott Smith albums for the last hour or so. Was I the only one who thought his music was his therapy?, his release? I always hoped it would keep him alive, but now realize it was all an elaborate and beautiful suicide note.

This proposes a serious, intriguing question, are all of the great artists tortured? Is...

i had a similar discussion with a friend of mine the other day. i think we arrived at the conclusion that artists are (for the most part- there are exceptions to every rule, of course) inherrently self-destructive. this however is coming from two artists, one of which (myself) has spent quite a bit of time in the old looney bin, and both of whom have struggled with various and sundry addictions for the past 10 or 15 years. so maybe our opinions are a bit biased due to personal experience...
but to (try to) answer your questions:

i don't think being psychological, emotionally, or otherwise fucked up necessarily means you're a good artist, or an artist at all. being open about yourself just means you're honest, and nothing more. and while honesty is an admirable trait, as is the ability to be open and share one's self with others, it's not what defines greatness. i mean, go to an open mic poetry reading. 90% of the stuff you'll hear is pretentious crap. just because you're up there "baring your soul" doesn't validate your art. i like the term "emotional exhibitionism", though... i think that hits the nail on the head.

it is exhibition, and people have different reasons for doing it- whether to boost their egos, get attention, or simply communicate. (i prefer to think that i do the latter, but i'm too cynical to believe that myself or anyone else is without another motive, whether consciously or not.)

uhg. ok, sorry i've cluttered up your journal... especially sorry if you were posing the questions hypothetically...

i'll stop now.
love,
-Hyena.

what the fuck, i can't fet a date for 2 months, then i have three girls chasing me at one time. it would be easier to choose a potential partner if i wouldn't have 3 women calling me that i am equally interested in calling me at once.

I had a great weekend. The girl I am seeing came in from NOLA for the weekend, so we got to hang out Saturday and Sunday. We went to my brother's bday party and then we check out some live music. A NOLA band played (Reception Is Suspected) and it was a wild show. Hopefully I can make a New Orleans trip this weekend.
